Where Art and Science Meet: Sebastian Frisch, Jos Volkers, Jet Smits

Biophonic Garden, Sebastian Frisch

biophonic garden

Biophonic Garden poses questions about the communication of plants. An experimental laboratory set-up is used to make dialogues between corn seeds perceptible to the human ear. Sprouted corn seeds are arranged in a grid and placed in a container filled with water. The acoustic environment under the seeds has been recorded by an underwater microphone, which allows visitors to listen to the communication between the seeds. While the roots of the plants are plunged under water, a constant sine tone of 220 Hz plays in the water. This has an impact on the growth process of the roots that bend to the source of the sound.

Sebastian Frisch is an artist, musician and developer. He uses various media technologies to create absorbing experiences and to discover possible connections between the digital and tangible. His main interest lies in the field of music, interactive art and cultural hacking. Sebastian has studied Sound Art and Computer Science at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, and has developed this work as a graduation project for the Art Science Master program at the Royal Conservatory and Academy of art in The Hague.

Ecological Space Engineering, Jos Volkers

ESE

Welcome in the future office of Ecological Space Engineering. E.S.E. is a fictitious company that focuses on the development of material for closed ecological systems.

As a criticism of our devastating dealings with nature, Jos Volkers presents a work that is based on ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ (Tuin der Lusten) by Hieronymus Bosch. On this flat earth there is organic life like plants, fungi and bacteria. The climate is mechanically maintained, air, water & light are circulating, and certain processses take place. During this period the earth will be subject to the conditions that are caused by the installation, nature slowly decays and over time there will be new life, organisms strive to survive. Jos Volkers distinguishes himself with ecological issues, the position of mankind and the malleability of nature. Because of his interests Ecological Space Engineering has gone an innovative way, during the exhibition this will be shown.

For Zone2Source Jos Volkers builds a temporary office in the Glass House. On a regular basis new objects will be added, he will provide insights into hypothetical developments and the audience will be actively engaged.

LC Environment, Jet Smits

LC_envir1

Liquid Crystal is a physical substance that is able to translate digital data to visual images. Many people are familiar with the use of this substance in the traditional form (the LCD screen), however Smits aims to use the unique properties of Liquid Crystal differently. This brings the versatility and aesthetic qualities of the material forward. Smits enables the visitor to experience the material directly in a live installation and a video.

Jet Smits studies empirical and analogue digital technologies. She examines the point at which data becomes visible for the first time, looking for the exact moment of change. She operates in the field of science and technology that is related to our perception. Her approach results in the use of various media and technologies. Based on her empirical research and artistic and scientific experiments, she creates contemplative and immersive installations.
