Symbiotic Spaces – Preparing for Shared Wildness

FIBER Festival Artist Talk

Ivan Henriques

Zone2Source is excited to announce that Ivan Henriques will talk about his work Ecoshroom – on view at het Glazen Huis until June 22 – at the upcoming FIBER Festival. FIBER is an Amsterdam-based meeting place for everyone interested in contemporary audiovisual art, experimental electronic music and daring conversations in relation to technological developments and societal issues.

About the Artist Talk
Can a building respond to its surroundings like a plant, or make decisions like fungi? In this talk, artist and researcher Ivan Henriques shares insights into Ecoshroom – a hybrid project that brings together plant-fungal communication, artificial intelligence, and architecture to explore new ways of thinking about life in the city. Developed during the Hungry EcoCities Residency, the work looks at how fungi and plants exchange signals below the surface, and how machine learning can begin to make sense of those interactions. Henriques will discuss how data from sensors, tracking things like light, humidity, and CO2, feeds into an adaptive system that also includes human input via touchscreen. Instead of aiming for efficiency alone, Ecoshroom asks what it means to design with, rather than for, other species. What might happen if we let organisms shape the space we live in?

About the artist
Ivan Henriques is an environmentalist, transdisciplinary artist, and researcher working with multimedia installations that explore complex systems. His practice investigates hybrids of living and non-living entities to develop new ways of engaging with (sometimes endangered and inhospitable) ecosystems. Together with his team, he creates methods to enhance communication between humans, machines, other organisms, and the environment. Nature is both his inspiration and a vital force guiding technological development. His work has received prestigious recognition, including the S+T+ARTS Hungry Ecocities, NWO Smart Cities, Research Through Design Award, Stimuleringsfonds Talent and Mondriaan Proven Talent Awards, the New Face Award (18th Japan Media Arts Festival), and an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica. His works are featured in publications by renowned art historians, philosophers, and scientists worldwide.
