How can gardening, and spending time in the garden and with plants change our point-of-view?
WORKSHOP: Taking the Overview, Underview and Longview in the Garden
With Genomic Gastronomy
Saturday 23 November, 2pm – 3:30pm
Genomic Gastronomy Garden, Amstelpark
Equipment needed: Boots for wet weather. A phone with camera if you have one.
In this workshop we will practise a set of listening, reading and movement activities in the Genomic Gastronomy Garden that attempt to stretch our imagination to the far future and to distant spaces, while highlighting aspects of the here & now that may not be immediately visible. Each activity activates one or more senses to transport us to another time or place in which the plants that surround us might be present.
Activities in this workshop will take inspiration from the UNDERVIEW, OVERVIEW, and LONG VIEW:
The UNDERVIEW is a chance to dig under the surface, and view the roots, soil and insects below the surface of the garden.
The OVERVIEW effect “is a cognitive shift reported by some astronauts while viewing the Earth from space.”
What is the scale of the LONG VIEW? “The LONG NOW foundation encourages imagination at the timescale of civilization — the next and last 10,000 years —a timespan we call the long now.”
Together we will move between and explore the indoor and outdoor portions of the garden, interact with the plants and the insects through observation, and listen closely.
