Birdscore I: FloorScore for Catalogue d’Oiseaux
by Olivier Messiaen
Here the singers become extinct birds. Their songs are reassembled after a long absence. The Catalogue d’Oiseaux by Olivier Messianen fragmented and reconfigured by flutist/composer, Michael Pestel in collaboration with the Genetic Choir (www.genetic-choir.org), and Jeroen van Westen performing on the Broominette.
Weekdays except Mondays, 2-5 + 9-12 October • Between 6:00 am and 3:00 pm
BirdGrid
BirdGrid is a performative research work. Jeroen van Westen gains multiple perspective on birds, people, and sounds as he draws on horizontal scrolls with BirdDrawingloves. His sounds and gestures connect with flutist Michael Pestel, who engages with birds and bird sound in the immediate environment. The locations are announced daily at het Glazen huis.
Sunday, October 7 • 4:00-5:00 pm
Catalogue of Extinct Birds
On stage, the piano and PCB’s, along with an amplified chalkboard, engage in an abstract ritual of resuscitation of extinct birdsounds – sounds we have never heard and can never hear, while the flute and trumpet call and respond from near and far away. Their sounds mingle with those of the local birds and the city. This performance will take place in the Stadshout Pavilion
Performers: Pianist with PCB’s (Piano Cluster Boards), Jeroen van Westen with an Amplified Chalkboard, 5-fingered BirDrawinGloves and Erasergloves, Michael Pestel with Alto and Concert flutes and Lina Allemano with a Trumpet and a Flute-muted Trumpet.
Wednesday, October 10, Kids workshop • 3:00-5:00 pm
BirdScore Kids
Children from 8 to 12 years are invited to join sound artist, Michael Pestel, and visual artist, Jeroen van Westen, to create their own performance exploring bird sounds and drawing birds on, in and around the mobile BirdDrawingCylinder.

Birdscore II – All the Birds of Amstelpark
A performative resume of the BirdGrid series in the Park.
The BirdGrid performative research will present its results in the form of Avian ScrollScores. In this performance, an ensemble of improvising musicians ‘read’ the scrolls. The musicians switch from one scroll to the other with differing interpretations of the inadvertent graphic notation. During the performance, one final scroll will be created.
