We invite the people of Amsterdam and the surrounding area to celebrate together that it is Christmas time, that we are together and that the earth carries and nourishes us. We celebrate this with fire, chocolate milk and an Earth ritual. People are invited to bring a handful of soil*. Earth from a place where they feel connected to the Earth. Everyone is welcome.
The Earth* that people take with them becomes part of the Earth ritual during the darkest time of the year. CELEBRATE THE EARTH is organised by Circus Andersom at Zone2Source in the Glass House in the Amstelpark. Bring a handful of earth from a place you love, (You can dry and clean this soil at home in preparation (simply remove twigs, roots and stones). Afterwards we drink hot chocolate together, by the fire.
Although Christmas originally meant reflection and turning inward, today’s Christmas celebration is often overloaded with abundance. CELEBRATE THE EARTH offers a new perspective, in which we strive for simplicity and connection. The desire for home and connection with the Earth is central. This initiative serves as an optimistic starting point to experience the urgency of Earth connection, not only for the planet but also for our individual well-being.
In the darkest days of the year, we invite you for a time of togetherness. The long winter nights bring time to contemplate and embrace this magical time of year. In the past, these nights were celebrated with the ritual of ‘Earth Stirring’. We reflect on what we get and receive from the Earth, and we show gratitude. It is also a moment of connection and recognition of the invisible world of dreams and intentions.
Complex problems created by humans infiltrate the times in which we live. Fortunately, the Earth itself remains true. With all its multiplicity, it is, at its core, simple. This simplicity, and a human desire for it, is the starting point of Journey to Earth.
CELEBRATE THE EARTH is part of Journey to the Earth, an expedition that appeals to the inner imagination by maker collective Circus Andersom. A public search for forms, ideas, language, routes, anchors and compasses, to recalibrate our bond with Mother Earth.
