The Moles of Modernism

Sarah van Sonsbeeck

The Glazen Huis | 1 – 27 February, 2022

Open day February 27, 12.00 – 15.00 hours

As part of our Park Studio program, Zone2Source welcomes Sarah van Sonsbeeck in February 2022 to spend a month in the Glazen Huis working and researching the Amstelpark. This February Zone2Source welcomes Sarah van Sonsbeeck as Park Studio artist to do research in the Glazen Huis. In her artistic research, Sarah will bridge the interior of the Glazen Huis with its outdoor surroundings. The grass landscape enclosing the Glazen Huis is filled with molehills, the artist will find a way to continue this landscape into the building. The premise of her research reads as follows: “If modernism is the attempted triumph of control over nature, the moles are perhaps the better architects even if they are (nearly) blind.” Sarah’s work aspires to become the starting point inviting visitors to reflect on moles and modernism.
“Upon my visit of the Glazen Huis, I was struck by its transparency. Having studied architecture in Delft we used to learn that glass represented the summum of the modernist ideal of the transparent flow of the private into the public and vice versa, of connecting the individual with the world. However glass is one of the hardest building materials we know, only (somewhat) transparent to the gaze, but blocking all other senses as for instance Jacques Tati’s movie Playtime (1967) so brilliantly shows.” – Sarah van Sonsbeeck upon observing the Glazen Huis.
She will talk about her installation during the open day on 27 February.

About the artist
Sarah van Sonsbeeck (1976, Utrecht NL) is a visual artist who usually explores the concept of silence in their works. They hold an architecture degree from TU Delft (MA) and continued to study art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (BA). From 2008 – 2009 she had a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Her work is two-sided: on the one hand, she tries to define, defend and extend private space; on the other, she simultaneously reveals the impossibility and perhaps even undesirability of being completely shut off from the world. https://www.sarahvansonsbeeck.com/
